Sunday Service Sermon 18.26

April 26 10:30 - 11:30 am  |  Faith Evangelical Free Church

90 East St, Boyceville, WI, USA

Devoted To The Apostles Teaching

After the resurrection of Jesus, the disciples, now called Apostles, were given the mission to teach what they had learned and proclaim what they had seen. The sending of the Holy Spirit enabled great change in them and those who heard.

Something’s Not Right

The text explored – What is going on here?

Two stories compared

Barnabas-The positive example

Ananias & Saphira – A hard lesson

Scripture is a “warts and all” account

  • How seriously does God take sin?
  • What was (and wasn’t) their sin?
  • Does God protect His church today?

We are challenged by scripture today!

How we use our resources

How we deal with sin

The church is important to God – do we have the same values?

Two Questions

Are you asking “How can I sacrifice to build up the Church?”

Are you confronting sin in your life?

Memorize this-

Ezekiel 18:23 Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked, declares the Lord God, and not rather that he should turn from his way and live?

Godly sorrow over our sin is not a popular topic of teaching in pulpits today. Indeed, many have rightly lamented this failure throughout church history. The North American evangelical church today suffers by not stressing godly sorrow in our Christian experience and, as a result, also missing a certain type of godly joy that accompanies such sorrow. For such sorrow brings us to God, through Christ, by the Spirit. Pray earnestly for this sorrow over your sin and for preaching that cultivates such a spiritual disposition.

As Christians we should also remember that only the grace of God makes us differ from the vilest sinner in the world. It should humble us to our core to know that, given the right time and circumstances, we could have been a Hitler or a Stalin. This does not deny human responsibility for our actions; but all humanity shares the natural infection and terminal disease of sin, which can only be cured by the triune God. By God’s grace we can thank Him and rejoice that we are not what we used to be or what we could be. Still, we must remember the sin that remains and mourn over what could destroy our lives completely apart from the mercy of God in Christ.
