Doctrine of the Holy Spirit

Who is God the Holy Spirit and what does He do? We are told much

about this important doctrine in the scriptures and in studying them we

will be better equipped for the work God has for us as a church.

Colossians 1:10 (ESV)

so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him:

bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;

     Fruit is Christlike character. Paul put it in one sentence in

Galatians 5:22: “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,

kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” This

list describes the character traits of Jesus Christ. We are to

reproduce the life of Christ in us as we abide in the vine. Jesus

said: “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me,

and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing”

(John 15:5). To underline the absolute necessity to be in

Christ—to be a “real” branch—Jesus repeats the grim warning He

gave in John 15:2: “If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out

as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them

into the fire, and they are burned” (John 15:6).

     But to bear the fruit of the Spirit, or any other kind of Christian

fruit, we must understand one principle. The way to fruitfulness is

through Christ. One of the most frustrating tasks in the world is to

try to bear the fruit of the Spirit on our own. We look at our lives

and see that we are a bit short on Christian love. So, we grunt and

groan and try to produce more love. Or we detect that we don’t

have Christian peace in our lives, so we work so hard at producing

more peace that we get more uptight than ever.

    Jesus doesn’t tell us: “Get out there and bear more fruit!” He

simply instructs us to abide, to remain with Him, and fruit will

appear of its own accord.
